The MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center (MAERC) at Buck Island Ranch was established in 1988 as an agro-ecological research and education facility for studying and teaching about the interelationships between agriculture, ranching operations and the environment.  The Ranch is owned by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and is leased at no cost to Archbold Expeditions, an independent, not-for-profit organization that includes MAERC, Archbold Biological Station, and the Reserve.  The MAERC research program contributes to a better understanding and broader awareness of the ecological, economic and cultural values of Florida's Cattle ranches.
